Of the three Duval High School junior shooters who travelled to the Dairyville Range at Coffs Harbour for the recent National Benchrest Rimfire Championships, two distinguished themselves in the results. At his first competition 12-year-old Patrick Simpson won the trophy for first Junior in the Heavy Rimfire event and 14-year-old Tiffany Tarrant was placed third in the Juniors event for the International Rimfire Benchrest, as well as winning two screamer patches in the Heavy Rimfire event. Thirteen starters competed on Sunday 19 March in the 300m fly shoot. As no points were awarded for group size the possible score was 250 instead of 300. First place went to Rob Cheetham on 233.2 followed by Rob Dalbon from Griffith on 231.2 and Mick Reed on 230.5. More fly matches are to be held the weekend of 25–26 March.

The 2017 SSAA National Rimfire Benchrest Championships were hosted by SSAA NSW Coffs Harbour Branch at the Dairyville Range from 9 to 11 March. Competition was keen, with some close results. After a practice day on the first day the competition commenced on 9 March with the Light category contestants testing their skills. Shotgun: Mick Reed dominated the competition on Saturday 4 March, breaking 47, followed by Josh Arundell both on 40 and then David Sides on 38. Centrefield rifle: Sunday's competition was hotly contested with the first five scoring better than 300 but Mick Reed took first place with 360.2, with Rob Wells on 340.1 second, Rob Baird (330.1) third, Mick McAuliffe (325) fourth and Clayton Hogno (312) fifth.
