Debate in Parliament – Update

In case you missed it, the NSW Parliament debated the record-breaking SSAA NSW ePetition calling for a proportionate, evidence-based, and consultative approach to firearms policy on Thursday, 26 March. With more than 98,600 signatures (and over 6,000 SSAA NSW members clicking the link to watch the debate), the ePetition sparked discussion across the chamber, with MPs acknowledging the scale of community engagement and the strong response from firearms owners and regional communities following the introduction of new laws after the Bondi tragedy.

Throughout the debate, speakers raised concerns about the speed at which the legislation was introduced and the lack of consultation with those directly affected. Early impacts included a surge in licence applications, increased pressure on administrative systems, and flow-on effects for businesses and clubs.

A key theme was the importance of ensuring policy responses remain focused on addressing criminal behaviour, rather than placing additional burdens on law-abiding firearms owners.

The debate underscored the importance of ongoing engagement with all industry stakeholders, with many calling for more thorough consultation to ensure future policy is practical, effective, evidence-based, and avoids unintended consequences.

We sincerely thank the Members of Parliament who showed their support for SSAA NSW and law-abiding firearms owners. There’s still plenty of work ahead, and we’ll continue advocating strongly for our community.
