Safe Shooting Course

The Safe Shooting Course combines theory and face-to-face practical training.

1. Theory component:

You will receive study materials that explain key concepts in simple language. Reading through this booklet and watching the video before your session helps you prepare for the course.

When you attend your course, an approved instructor will guide you through a comprehensive theory component. You will be required to complete a multiple-choice theory assessment.

2. Practical session:

This session includes:

• Demonstrations of correct sighting, aiming, and trigger control.
• Hands-on firearm handling and safety practice.
• A practical test to assess your ability to handle firearms safely.

Note: Candidates must pass the theory test before undertaking the practical session

All instructors are approved by the SSAA NSW and must hold:

• A valid firearms licence.
• At least three years’ experience in the safe use of longarm firearms.
• An official Safe Shooting Course Instructor approval

This ensures a consistent, professional standard of training across all SSAA NSW branches and affiliate clubs.

The total time required depends on your previous experience:

• First-time shooters: approximately 5-6 hours (including theory and practical assessment).
• Experienced applicants may complete the course in a shorter time.

Courses are held regularly at SSAA NSW branches and ranges across the state. In some regional or remote areas, the course may include a mix of distance learning and in-person training.

Once you pass both the theory and practical components, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment, which is required to apply for your NSW firearms licence.
