Train to become a qualified Range Officer in NSW

If you have ever wanted to play a bigger part in keeping your local shooting range safe, fair and welcoming, the SSAA NSW Range Officer Course is for you.

Range Officers are the backbone of every well-run shooting range. They make sure all activities are carried out safely, fairly and in accordance with range rules and NSW firearms laws. This course gives you the skills, knowledge and confidence to step into that Safety Supervisor role.

Why this course exists and what you will learn

Every range day depends on the calm, capable presence of a qualified Range Officer. This course exists to ensure that those in charge of the range have the training they need to make shooting safe and enjoyable for everyone. By the end of the course, you will:

This course is for SSAA NSW members who:

  • Hold a current NSW firearms licence (Category A, B or H depending on the range).
  • A Category A/B licence. Participants licensed for Hunting only may enrol, however, their role will be limited to sight-in duties.
  • Handgun/Pistol (Category H) accreditation can be added if required.
  • Participants must complete a refresher course every three years to remain current.
  • Are endorsed by their SSAA NSW Branch or Affiliate Club.
  • Have good communication skills and a commitment to range safety.
  • You must be a financial member of the SSAA NSW.

You don’t need prior experience managing a range, your instructor will guide you through everything you need to know.

The course combines theory and practical training, delivered by accredited SSAA NSW trainers. You will cover:

  • Safe operation and clearance of a wide range of firearms (rifles, shotguns, and handguns/pistols).
  • How to safely operate a range as a supervisor.
  • Range commands, signage, and safety procedures.
  • Communication and people-management skills.
  • Environmental and noise compliance standards.
  • Legal obligations for firearm storage, transport, and use.
  • Incident reporting and conflict resolution.

You will complete a theory assessment (multiple-choice questions) and a practical assessment, where you will be observed running a range under the supervision of a Senior Range Officer.

In order to train as a Range Officer, your branch needs to nominate you. Once you complete the course, you will receive an SSAA NSW Range Officer ID card showing your:

  • Name
  • Category (Longarm and/or Handgun)
  • Authorising Branch or Club

You will then be qualified to supervise and manage activities at the range/s your Branch operates from.

All Range Officers must complete a refresher course every three years to stay current and maintain their accreditation.

As a Range Officer, you’ll represent SSAA NSW and your local club. That means maintaining a safe, friendly, and professional atmosphere every time you step onto the range. You’ll be expected to:

  • Lead by example and treat all shooters with respect.
  • Follow and enforce range rules and safety procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and calmly under pressure.
  • Make quick, fair decisions that keep everyone safe.
  • Model good sportsmanship and professionalism.

SSAA NSW Range Officers are ambassadors for the sport, helping others learn, participate and enjoy shooting safely.

Your branch will need to nominate you to complete a Range Officer Course. The nomination form can be found here
