This qualification will also allow you to become a Contract Shooter, or join the Supplementary Pest Control Program in conjunction with NSW National Parks & Wildlife
Why the course exists and what you’ll learn
AHCPMG304 describes the skills and knowledge required to euthanase animals using firearms and techniques appropriate to the type and mobility of the target animal. The unit focuses on achieving humane outcomes while maintaining the highest standards of firearm safety, animal welfare and legal compliance.:

Safe and responsible firearms handling in operational environments, including Practical Firearms Accreditation (Rimfire and Centrefire Rifle and Shotgun)

Planning, risk management and field-based decision-making for animal control activities

Humane animal destruction principles and protocols to support ethical outcomes in the field

Animal welfare, legislative and compliance requirements relating to the use of firearms and pest animal management

Selecting and applying appropriate techniques based on the target animal, operational circumstances and field conditions.
This nationally recognised training is delivered by Industry Training Specialists (RTO 45860), operated by SSAA (NSW) Ltd, and facilitated by qualified, experienced trainers who equip participants with the practical skills and knowledge to apply industry best practice in the field.
This course is ideal for:
- Farmers and landholders managing pest animals on rural properties.
- Professional pest controllers and contractors working under a permit.
- Volunteers and members taking part in Contract Shooting, Supplementary Pest Control programs with NSW National Parks or the Farmer Assist program.
- Anyone wanting formal, welfare-focused training in humane destruction methods.
You don’t need to be an expert, just someone who takes animal welfare and safety seriously.
The course combines practical skills with clear, down-to-earth learning. You’ll cover:
- Understanding animal behaviour and welfare outcomes.
- When and how humane destruction may be necessary.
- Using firearms safely and effectively for pest control.
- NSW laws, permits and regulations around animal management.
- Personal safety, PPE, and site risk management.
- Biosecurity, carcass handling, and disposal procedures.
- Accurate reporting and communication with landowners or authorities.
You’ll complete both theory and hands-on practical components, including an efficiency and accuracy assessment under close supervision from approved instructors.
To take part, you’ll need to:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Hold a full NSW Longarms Firearms Licence with one of the hunting/pest control genuine reasons.
- Bring photo ID.
Courses usually run for one full day, combining classroom learning and practical demonstrations.
You’ll complete a short written assessment and a practical accuracy evaluation where you demonstrate safe firearm handling and decision-making.
Once you’ve successfully completed both parts, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion - recognising your competency in humane animal destruction and safe firearm use.
