Combined Services Shooting
Military heritage, marksmanship, and camaraderie
Combined Services shooting NSW brings together history, precision, and teamwork in a discipline that celebrates the service firearms once used by defence forces around the world.
The sport began in the 1980s in Victoria and Queensland, originally known as Military Rifle, and has since evolved into a popular national competition that includes both rifle and pistol events.

The aim of this discipline is to promote safe, skilled, and enjoyable use of military-style firearms in a controlled, competitive setting.
It’s ideal for shooters who appreciate the engineering and heritage of service weapons, and who enjoy the challenge of competing on an even playing field.
Competitions are designed to help participants:
- Gain a deeper understanding of the safe handling and care of service firearms.
- Compete affordably, using commonly available rifles and pistols.
- Develop consistent accuracy, discipline, and focus.
All pistols and rifles must be of service origin.
Combined Services events feature a mix of rifle and pistol matches, fired from different positions and distances.
Rifles may include bolt-action, semi-automatic (where permitted), or historical service rifles from various eras, while pistols must also have a recognised service background.
Events are scored on accuracy and consistency, with standardised rules ensuring fair competition across all classes.
Combined Services matches are run at several SSAA branches across the state, including:
