Learn the foundations of safe and responsible shooting

Safety is at the heart of everything we do at SSAA NSW.

Our Safe Shooting Course (longarms) is designed specifically for new shooters applying for their first NSW firearms licence – guiding you through both the theory and practical skills needed to handle firearms confidently, responsibly, and in accordance with the law.

What the course covers

The SSAA NSW Safe Shooting Course is approved by the NSW Commissioner of Police and provides essential knowledge in:

SSAA NSW

Understanding the parts and operation of firearms (rifles and shotguns).

SSAA NSW

Firearm safety principles — how to load, unload, and handle firearms safely.

SSAA NSW

Ammunition basics and correct usage.

SSAA NSW

Cleaning and maintaining your firearm.

SSAA NSW

Safe storage and transport requirements under NSW law.

SSAA NSW

Firearms legislation and licence categories.

SSAA NSW

Hygiene and protective gear required on the range.

SSAA NSW

Field and range safety procedures.

This is not a shooting performance or competition course. It is a practical safety qualification that ensures every participant understands their legal and ethical responsibilities as a licensed shooter and law abiding firearm owner.

Everything you need to know

The Safe Shooting Course combines theory and face-to-face practical training.

1. Theory component:

You will receive study materials that explain key concepts in simple language. Reading through this booklet and watching the video before your session helps you prepare for the course.

When you attend your course, an approved instructor will guide you through a comprehensive theory component. You will be required to complete a multiple-choice theory assessment.

2. Practical session:

This session includes:

  • Demonstrations of correct sighting, aiming, and trigger control.
  • Hands-on firearm handling and safety practice.
  • A practical test to assess your ability to handle firearms safely.

Note: Candidates must pass the theory test before undertaking the practical session

Pre-course material: Watch this video.

Read the booklet here.

All instructors are approved by the SSAA NSW and must hold:

  • A valid firearms licence.
  • At least three years’ experience in the safe use of longarm firearms.
  • An official Safe Shooting Course Instructor approval

This ensures a consistent, professional standard of training across all SSAA NSW branches and affiliate clubs.

The total time required depends on your previous experience:

  • First-time shooters: approximately 5-6 hours (including theory and practical assessment).
  • Experienced applicants may complete the course in a shorter time.

Courses are held regularly at SSAA NSW branches and ranges across the state. In some regional or remote areas, the course may include a mix of distance learning and in-person training.

  • Photo identification
  • Completed P650 Declaration Form will be signed at the range on the day - View the form here
  • Closed shoes

Once you pass both the theory and practical components, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment, which is required to apply for your NSW firearms licence.
