Try Shooting

Experience the thrill of shooting - no licence required

Curious about what it’s like to shoot?

Our Try Shooting sessions are the perfect way to experience the excitement of target shooting in a safe, supervised and friendly environment.

Run by SSAA NSW-accredited Range Officers, these events are designed for first-timers – individuals, families, and groups – who want to give shooting a go without committing to a course or a licence just yet.

Whether you’re after a fun day out, a unique team-building activity, or just want to try something new, SSAA NSW Try Shooting events make it easy to get started.

What to expect

You will learn the basics of firearm safe handling under expert one-on-one supervision. You will be expected to complete a P650 (NSW Police Firearms Registry requirement for a non-licensed person to undertake a shooting activity during training or Try Shooting) self-declaration form when you get to the range. You can preview the P650 declaration form here

Most sessions use a .22 calibre rifle or handgun which are ideal firearms for beginners. This experience will provide you with an entry-level understanding of what to expect when participating in club shooting environments.

How to book a Try Shooting session

Loved shooting? Take the next step!

Try Shooting sessions are offered at a number of SSAA NSW branches/ranges around the state.

To find your nearest branch or range and enquire about upcoming sessions, visit our branch directory.

Each branch or range sets its own schedule and booking process, so please contact them directly to confirm available times.

If you enjoyed your Try Shooting experience, the next step toward becoming a law-abiding in the possession and use of firearms is completing a SSAA NSW Safe Shooting Course which is an entry-level mandatory requirement that you must complete prior to applying for a firearms licence in NSW (from ages 12 – 18 you can enter the sport under the Minors Permit Scheme which must be authorised by a parent or guardian).
