SSAA NSW - Shooting Disciplines - Pioneer

Step back in time and relive Australia’s frontier spirit

Pioneer Shooting (formerly known Colonial Action shooting) NSW is a celebration of our early pioneers and the firearms they carried as Australia grew from isolated colonies into a united nation.

This unique sport recreates the shooting styles and conditions of the mid-to-late 1800s, giving participants a hands-on connection to history, with a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and camaraderie.

Pioneer Shooting began in the 1990s when SSAA members wanted a discipline that reflected the firearms of Australia’s early settlers.

Our early pioneers came from all over the world: England, Scotland, Ireland, bringing a mix of firearm designs and technologies that shaped the colonial era.

This discipline remembers that era while providing a fun, competitive shooting experience. The defined “Colonial Period” runs from around 1850 to Federation in 1901 - the decades that shaped Australia’s identity.

Participants use original or reproduction firearms typical of the colonial era - revolvers, lever-action rifles, double-barrel shotguns, and Martini .310 Cadet rifles.

Each course of fire is different and shot one competitor at a time, often moving between targets, reloading, and engaging multiple firearms against the clock.

Scoring is based on total time plus any penalties - so accuracy and smooth handling are both key.

Pioneer Shooting shares roots with Western Action Shooting, but with one key difference - competitors use a single pistol instead of two. It also blends aspects of Practical Shooting and Muzzleloading, making it one of SSAA’s most dynamic and entertaining disciplines.

Many events also include “speed pistol,” “speed rifle,” or “speed shotgun” side matches, along with long-range and black powder categories.

Authenticity is part of the fun. Participants are encouraged to wear clothing and gear inspired by the 1850–1901 period - from gold-rush settlers to colonial police or mounted troopers.

The costumes, combined with traditional firearms and themed stages, create a truly immersive experience that celebrates our shared heritage.

The home of Pioneer Shooting shooting in NSW is the SSAA Mudgee Branch, located at the scenic Windamere Regional Shooting Complex, 35 km south of Mudgee.

Four major competition weekends are held each year - in March, May, September, and November (the November event is the annual Western Action shoot). Camping is available onsite, with toilet and shower facilities for competitors and families.

If you’re passionate about Australia’s colonial past, or simply want to try a shooting sport with character, we’d love to see you at one of our events.
