Eligibility requirements

To apply for a licence in NSW, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old (or 12 years old for a minor’s permit).
  • Be a fit and proper person with no prohibitions under the Firearms Act.
  • Have a genuine reason for owning and using a firearm. For most members, this is sport/target shooting, collecting or recreational hunting/vermin control.

Join an approved club or association

One of the easiest ways to meet the “genuine reason” requirement for your firearms licence is to become a member of an approved shooting club or association – like SSAA NSW.

Your membership will support your licence application and give you access to clubs, ranges and events.
