Getting Started with a NSW Firearms Licence
Your step-by-step guide
If you are new to shooting we at SSAA NSW are here to make the process simple, supportive and clear.
This easy to follow guide will take you through the process.
Eligibility requirements
To apply for a licence in NSW, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old (or 12 years old for a minor’s permit).
- Be a fit and proper person with no prohibitions under the Firearms Act.
- Have a genuine reason for owning and using a firearm. For most members, this is sport/target shooting, collecting or recreational hunting/vermin control.
Join an approved club or association
One of the easiest ways to meet the “genuine reason” requirement for your firearms licence is to become a member of an approved shooting club or association – like SSAA NSW.
Your membership will support your licence application and give you access to clubs, ranges and events.
Complete a firearms safe shooting course
Before applying, you must complete the SSAA NSW approved firearms safe shooting course for either longarms or pistol (in order to complete a pistol safe shooting course, please speak to your local branch). These courses cover the basics of safe handling, storage and use of firearms.
Submit your application to the NSW Firearms Registry
Once you have completed your safety training and have become a member of SSAA NSW, you can submit your firearms licence application through the NSW Firearms Registry.
Be prepared to provide:
- Proof of your SSAA NSW membership
- Your safety course certificate of attainment
- Proof of ID and residence
- Licence fees (payment)
Complete your mandatory waiting period
Receive your licence and start your sport shooting journey
