Safe Shooting Course (Handgun)

SSAA - Hill Top Grand Opening 22.11.2025 (Captured by Elegant Exposures)

If you are applying for a NSW firearms licence to own or use a handgun, you will need to join a pistol club and complete an approved Safe Shooting Course (Handgun/Pistol). Delivered by SSAA NSW–approved instructors, this course ensures every new handgun user understands safety, handling, and legal responsibilities before stepping onto the range.

What the pistol safe shooting course covers

The handgun course expands on the principles covered in the long-arm training, with additional modules designed specifically for pistol handling. You will learn:

NOTE: This is not a standalone course. You have to join a pistol club to complete this course.

The handgun/pistol course combines classroom theory with practical, supervised range sessions:

  • Theory session: Learn firearm safety principles, legal responsibilities of handgun ownership,  and NSW storage laws.
  • Written test: Complete a multiple-choice theory assessment.
  • Practical session: Demonstrate safe handling, operation, and control of a handgun under supervision.
  • Practical assessment: Your instructor will evaluate your ability to safely load, unload, and operate the firearm.

You must pass the theory component before progressing to the practical. The full course generally takes 4-6 hours, depending on experience.

All instructors are certified as a Pistol Safe Handling Instructor by SSAA NSW. Each instructor must:

  • Hold a valid handgun (Category H) licence for at least three years.
  • Be certified as a Pistol Safe Shooting Instructor.
  • Adhere to SSAA NSW’s Instructor Policy and course integrity standards.

This ensures you receive the highest standard of training in line with state safety and compliance regulations.
