Mandatory Participation Requirements – what you need to know!

Ensure you’ve completed your mandatory Participation Requirements prior to the June 30 cut off!

Check your NSW Firearms Licence for attendance requirements, and submit your proof of attendance.

The reporting period for 2024/2025 runs from 1st July 2024 to 30th June 2025, and during this time, all NSW Firearms Licence holders must complete specific attendance requirements based on the genuine reasons printed on the back of their licence.

What are my attendance requirements?

For example:

  • If you hold an A/B Category Target shooting licence, you are required to complete 4 target attendances.
  • If you hold an A/B Category Recreational Hunting Licence supported solely by Club Membership, you need to complete 2 hunting club events or attendances in a Firearms Registry approved range.
  • If you hold a G Category Collectors Licence, you need to attend 1 collectors meeting per reporting period.

Your SSAA membership activities should mirror these genuine reasons; please refer to the bottom right-hand side of your SSAA Membership Card for your registered activities.

Please note that these requirements apply only to long-arms. Handgun members should contact their Pistol Club directly. You can complete these attendances at any NSW range by using the SSAA NSW Attendance Book or Electronic Attendance System (EAS), and records will be updated accordingly.

For further details on the legislative requirements, please review Part 10 of the NSW Firearms Regulations 2017 or contact the relevant SSAA department.

FAQs

Here are a few Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) we thought may help:

When is the SSAA NSW Reporting Period?

The 2024/2025 Reporting Period runs from the 1st of July 2024 to the 30th of June 2025.

How do I know what my participation requirements are?

Your genuine reasons can be found on the back of your NSW Firearms Licence card:

  • If it has Target Shooting (NOT Category H) you are required to complete a minimum of four (4) target attendances per reporting period.
  • If it has Rec Hunting/Vermin Control, you are required to complete a minimum of two (2) hunting club events or attendances in a Firearms Registry approved range per reporting period.
  • If it has Collecting you are required to attend a minimum of one (1) collectors meeting per reporting period.

Your SSAA membership activities should be an accurate reflection of your NSW Firearms Licence genuine reasons. Your membership activities can be found on the bottom right-hand side of your SSAA Membership Card. Please note – you should not have H and O listed on the same membership (Hunting should only be listed on your SSAA Membership if Club Membership is the sole reason for which the licensee has established the genuine reason for recreational hunting/vermin control).

The above information is for Long-arm participation requirements only – for handgun requirements, please contact your Pistol Club directly.

Where can I complete my mandatory participation requirements?

You’re able to attend any range in NSW, if you complete a SSAA NSW Attendance book or SSAA NSW Electronic Attendance System, then those attendances will be sent to us from the Branch or Club. If you complete the attendance somewhere else, please forward a copy of the attendance pass/receipt you receive along with your name and membership number to attendances@nsw.ssaa.org.au, and we’ll enter it in manually for you.

How can I find out how many attendances SSAA NSW has on record for me?

If you signed in using the SSAA NSW Electronic Attendance System, the proof of attendance you receive will have a list of the previous attendances we have on record for you. We will be sending out personalised correspondence to any member who has not yet met the mandatory participation requirements for the 2024/2025 reporting period within the next few weeks.

I don’t own a firearm, what can I do?

The mandatory attendances are a requirement of holding a NSW Firearms Licence irrespective of firearms ownership. Please contact your local Branch for information on hiring or borrowing a firearm for participation requirements.

Where can I find information about my participation requirements?

Part 10 of the NSW Firearms Regulations 2017 lists the participation requirements for all NSW Firearms Licence holders. It can be found here.
