Saddle Up for Single Action Shooting

Single Action Shooting is the fast-paced, Old West-inspired sport which continues to gain traction in Australia, with local clubs expanding and passionate shooters leading the way.

For one world champion, the journey began as a teenager watching his father compete. “I was drawn in by the family atmosphere and the support from the Single Action community,” says Sam Medway (some may recognise Sam as the from the Safe Shooting brochure). That support led him to international success, including a junior title in 2008 and the historic achievement of becoming the first non-American to win the Men’s Overall World Championship in 2013.

Behind the revolvers and lever-action rifles is a sport rich in history and showmanship. Participants dress in period clothing, use pre-1900-style firearms, and compete on reactive steel targets — making it as entertaining to watch as it is to shoot.

According to the NSW Single Action Discipline Chair and President of the SSAA NSW Bathurst Branch, Matt Barwick the appeal is broad: “The historical costumes and Old West theme attract all kinds of shooters, especially younger participants and women. It’s fast, visual, and community-driven.”
