The Game and Feral Animal Legislation Amendment (Conservation Hunting) Bill 2025 seeks to formally recognise conservation hunting as a tool for managing invasive species and supporting cultural heritage in NSW.
Introduced by Robert Borsak (Shooters, Fishers & Farmers Party), the Bill proposes a Conservation Hunting Authority, a new licence, and expanded access to Crown and state forest lands (excluding national parks).

SSAA NSW Supports Responsible, Licensed Hunting
Our SSAA NSW President, Lance Miller and CEO, Pete Szaak appeared before the Parliamentary Review Committee to support the Bill because it:
- Recognises member contributions: Licensed hunters already play a critical role in managing feral species, protecting endangered habitats, and supporting rural communities. Evidence shows hunters eliminate more feral animals than other program, providing a cost-effective solution to invasive species.
- Aligns with the National Firearms Agreement (NFA): Recent claims that the Bill contravenes the NFA are incorrect. Hunting is a recognised and genuine reason for firearm ownership under NSW and national law. The legislation maintains strong firearms safety standards and does not weaken existing regulations.
- Supports safe, regulated use of technology, such as suppressors, thermal optics and night vision on private land to improve safety and efficiency in pest control (Lance also submitted a research paper to support the use of suppressors at the Parliamentary Review).
Ensures governance and oversight: The proposed Conservation Hunting Authority introduces transparent administration and structured oversight for conservation programs

Why This Matters
By giving licensed hunters a formal role in conservation, the Bill acknowledges the practical environmental, economic, and cultural contributions of SSAA NSW members. Hunters help maintain ecological balance, support rural tourism, and reduce government costs — all while complying with strict firearm laws.
The Bill provides a practical, evidence-based framework for responsible hunting and conservation
