Single Action Shooting

SSAA NSW - Shooting Disciplines - Single Action

Step back in time and relive the spirit of the Old West

Single action shooting NSW is one of the most colourful and entertaining shooting sports in Australia. Inspired by the pioneering days of the 1800s, it combines marksmanship, historical firearms and Old West costuming in a friendly, fast-paced competition that celebrates skill and sportsmanship.

Single Action Shooting (SAS), sometimes called concept shooting, began more than 25 years ago in the USA and has since become one of the fastest-growing shooting sports in the world.

In Australia, SSAA Single Action Shooting – Australia is affiliated with the global governing body, the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), and follows the official International Rules of Single Action Shooting.

Competitors use firearms that would have been common before 1896, including:

  • Single-action revolvers
  • Lever-action rifles
  • Side-by-side shotguns without automatic ejectors

Ammunition and calibres are chosen to reflect the period, maintaining authenticity while ensuring safety and consistency in matches.

Targets are typically steel plates – square, round or shaped like playing-card suits - that react when hit. Some stages even include clay targets for variety.

Every competition features multiple “stages” or mini-matches, each with a unique storyline and target sequence. Shooters must engage targets in the exact order described in the stage instructions, adding a layer of strategy and precision.

Most matches include 10–12 stages, though smaller club shoots may have as few as four.

Part of what makes this discipline unique is its deep sense of character. Competitors dress in period-appropriate outfits - think frontier vests, long coats, and cowboy hats - and embrace their roles as “living historians.”

The atmosphere is one of friendly rivalry, creativity and respect for tradition. As the community says, it’s all about the spirit of the game, a blend of fun, fairness, and true sportsmanship.
