SSAA NSW continues to press the case for law-abiding firearms owners directly with parliamentarians.
Following last week’s meetings at Parliament House, our CEO Pete Szaak has continued those discussions, meeting individually with The Hon. (Nichole) Nichole Lorraine OVERALL, MLC, The Hon. (Natasha) Natasha MACLAREN-JONES, BN, MHSM, MLC, Mr (Richie) Richard James WILLIAMSON, MP, The Hon. (Aileen) Aileen MACDONALD, OAM, MLC and Ms (Steph) Stephanie Anne COOKE, MP.
We sincerely thank each of these parliamentarians for their time and willingness to hear our concerns about the new firearms laws and compulsory buyback.
On 16 September, the Legislative Assembly voted 31-47 against the motion to disallow the Firearms Amendment (Transitional Provisions) Regulation 2026. The outcome was disappointing, but it does not diminish our resolve. The concerns we have raised remain unanswered, and the consequences for our members, licensed dealers and regional communities remain very real.
In these meetings, Pete outlined the practical impact of TOLA and the buyback, alongside existing backlogs in permits to acquire, genuine reason applications and licence applications. These delays are already creating uncertainty and placing members in difficult positions.
Our position remains clear. We are calling for the repeal of TOLA provisions that unfairly impact law-abiding firearms owners. We oppose the compulsory buyback and continue to raise serious concerns about its impact on licensed dealers and their livelihoods.
Working alongside our stakeholder groups, we will maintain a united voice and keep pressing for fair, practical outcomes for the people we represent.
