Long Range Precision

Shooting Disciplines - SSAA NSW - Long Range Precision
Long Range Precision is a shooting discipline focused on achieving maximum accuracy at extreme distances, using handguns, rifles and black powder rifles.

The discipline is designed to test not only the shooter’s marksmanship, but also their understanding of ballistics, wind reading and equipment performance under real-world conditions.

Handgun events range from rimfire through to centrefire calibres and are shot at distances of up to 500 metres. Rifle events span calibres from .22 Long Rifle through to .50 BMG, with shooting distances extending as far as 2000 metres.

A defining feature of Long Range Precision is that competitors shoot from a cold barrel, without the use of benches or wind flags, closely simulating field shooting conditions.

Long Range Precision Shooting is built around realism and technical skill rather than mechanical support. Shooters must rely on their own judgement, preparation and consistency to succeed.

Key characteristics of the discipline include:

  • Five-shot strings fired from a cold barrel
  • No use of benches, wind flags or similar aids
  • Emphasis on reading wind and environmental conditions
  • A strong focus on firearm setup, ammunition choice and ballistic understanding

This format rewards careful preparation and deep knowledge of both equipment and shooting fundamentals.

Long Range Precision Shooting was introduced by the SSAA as a suite of events designed to develop accuracy and consistency across a wide range of firearms.

Rifle events

Rifle matches accommodate calibres from .22LR up to .50 BMG and are conducted over multiple distances, with a maximum range of 2000 metres. These events test precision at progressively longer distances and demand a high level of ballistic understanding.

Handgun events

Handgun competitions include both rimfire and centrefire calibres and are shot at distances of up to 500 metres, placing a strong emphasis on consistency, control and accuracy well beyond typical handgun ranges.

Black powder rifle events

Black powder rifles are also included within the discipline, applying the same principles of cold-barrel shooting and environmental awareness.

Long Range Precision Shooting seeks to:

  • Encourage the development of long-range competition shooting
  • Achieve extreme accuracy in firearms, ammunition and equipment
  • Promote experimentation to refine shooting methods and performance

The discipline appeals to shooters who enjoy problem-solving, technical refinement and the challenge of shooting accurately under demanding conditions.
