UPDATE: NSW Firearms Buyback | What Members Need to Know

NSW National Gun Buyback

Following today’s announcement by the NSW Minister for Police, the Hon. Yasmin Catley MP, SSAA NSW is addressing concerns about the buyback commencing on 2 November 2026.

2 November is the start of the buyback, not a deadline to surrender firearms above the announced caps. As at 26 October, NSW Police’s stakeholder advice confirms that these limits and reclassifications have not yet commenced and that the scheme is expected to run for 12 months, giving licence holders time to consider their options. Police also acknowledge that lawful sale or transfer may be available, depending on individual circumstances. Members should not feel pressured to surrender firearms simply because the scheme is opening. Before making that decision, please ensure you understand your legal obligations and the options available to you.

The parliamentary inquiry into the Firearms Legislation Amendment (Reforms Repeal) Bill 2026 and further consideration of the regulations, including possible disallowance by Parliament, may affect how the reforms and buyback operate. These matters are still being worked through and are worth considering before making a decision that cannot be reversed. However, no outcome is guaranteed, and these processes do not remove any obligation to comply with the law as it stands.

Compensation also needs clarification. Members should not assume that every firearm surrendered will attract payment, particularly additional firearms below their applicable cap. Before surrendering firearms through the buyback on the expectation of payment, seek written confirmation of eligibility from the NSW Firearms Registry. Your local licensing police can also assist with enquiries.
