Guide to Safe Storage of Firearms in NSW

Safe storage is not just a recommendation for firearm owners in NSW — it’s a legal requirement under the Firearms Act 1996. Whether you hold a licence, permit, or are a firearms dealer, you must meet the prescribed storage standards for your category.

Your Core Responsibilities:

All firearm owners must take reasonable precautions to ensure firearms:
• Are kept safe and secure,
• Are not lost or stolen, and
• Do not come into the possession of anyone who is not authorised to have them.

These requirements apply across all licence and permit types.

Different Categories, Different Standards

• Safe storage levels vary depending on the category of firearm:
• Level 1 – Category A & B
• Level 2 – Category C, D & H
• Higher levels apply for collectors, dealers, security firms, prohibited firearms/weapons, and museums.

Each level has specific requirements for:
• Type and construction of the safe or storage facility
• Anchoring or fixing
• Access control (keys, locks, codes)

Full details are set out in the Instrument of Approval under the Firearms Act.

Transport and Ammunition

The legislation also covers:
• Safe transport of firearms,
• Separate storage of ammunition, including acquisition and possession rules.

Complying with safe storage laws:

  • Protects you from legal penalties,
  • Prevents theft and unauthorised access,
  • Upholds community safety and the reputation of responsible shooters.

SSAA NSW strongly encourages members to regularly check that their safe storage meets or exceeds legal standards — and to treat safe storage as a non-negotiable part of responsible firearm ownership.

Compliant Safe Storage options are also available at select ranges across NSW like SSAA NSW Auburn Shooting Centre and St Mary’s Indoor Shooting Centre
